Qualification Training Range (QTR)

WRA provided complete architectural – engineering design and construction support services for the Qualification Training Range (QTR) at Fort Carson, Colorado. The USACE-Omaha District directed/managed this specific delivery order awarded under WRA’s Huntsville RTLP ID/IQ contract.The QTR range is used to train and test soldiers on the skills necessary to detect, identify, engage, and defeat stationary and moving infantry targets along with stationary armor targets. In order to centralize training and reduce land, maintenance, and unit overhead requirements, this range combines the capabilities of a modified record fire range (MRF), automated sniper field fire range, combat pistol firearms qualification course (CPQC), and the multipurpose machine gun range (MPMG). Fort Carson range-specific space requirements, and surface danger zone (SDZ) conflicts with other ranges, resulted in the CPQC and MRF range (12 lanes) being located adjacent to the MPMG (8 lanes) and Automated Sniper Field Fire range.The Range Operations and Control Area (ROCA) included the following standard buildings: Range Control Tower, Classroom Building, Operations / Storage Building, Covered Mess, Covered Bleacher, Ammunition Breakdown Building, and Vaulted Latrine. The building designs are considered “smart” designs that incorporate practical, energy saving design elements meeting the intent of LEED guidance within the range program amount.The design was completed on time and within budget. The construction award was significantly below WRA’s construction cost estimate and construction was completed in 2011.
