South Lake Regional Water Initiative Tech Memo

WRA has recently reached four milestones for the South Lake Regional Water Initiative (SLRWI) by completing: Technical Memorandum No. 2 – Available Traditional Groundwater Sources, South Lake County, Florida; Technical Memorandum No. 3 – Available Wastewater/Reclaimed Water, Surface Water, and Stormwater Sources, South Lake County, Florida; Technical Memorandum No. 4 – Alternative Water Supply Evaluation, South Lake County, Florida; and Technical Memorandum No. 5 – Mitigation Strategies and Infrastructure Needs, South Lake County, Florida. The SLRWI is made up of south Lake County communities including: the City of Clermont; the City of Groveland; the City of Mascotte; the City of Minneola; the Town of Montverde; Lake County Government; and Lake Utility Services, Inc. The SLRWI group was formed with the vision of intra-government/utility cooperation to solve south Lake County’s current and future water resource demands. The focus of Technical Memorandum No. 2 was an evaluation of traditional groundwater sources within south Lake County. The document provides an overview of the hydrogeology, specifically for this portion of the county, regional existing water use and sources, and a brief summary of recent Central Florida Water Initiative groundwater modeling evaluations. Technical Memorandum No. 3 was an evaluation of non-traditional water supply sources within south Lake County, specifically surface water sources, stormwater sources, and wastewater/reclaimed water sources. The memorandum provides an overview of: the surface water hydrology, specifically for south Lake County; a regional review of non-traditional water supply sources, specifically surface water sources, stormwater sources, and wastewater/reclaimed water sources; and provides a case study regarding a hypothetical move from septic tanks to integrated sewer connections. The focus of Technical Memorandum No. 4 was an evaluation to determine if there are any potential alternative water resources available for meeting or off-setting future demands and/or available for potential minimum flow and levels (MFLs) mitigation use. This evaluation considered local sources, such as lower Floridan aquifer production wells, and regional sources such as Yankee Lake. Technical Memorandum No. 5 evaluated potential mitigation strategies to reduce impacts due to groundwater/surface water withdrawals at MFL locations. These potential strategies included rapid infiltration basins (RIBs), water control structures, the potential shift of production wells from the upper to the lower Floridan aquifer, culverts, and land surface modifications.
