Parris Island KD Range
PARRIS ISLAND KD RANGE - Know Distance Range
MCRD Parris Island, SC
Design 2016 to Present
WRA is lead range design and civil engineer for the demolition and replacement of the existing Hue City Known Distance (KD) range at Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) Parris Island, South Carolina. The intent of the project is to improve safety, functional operations, stormwater management, and environmental impact while modernizing the range facility to current TC-25-8 standards to support the mission of the Depot.
The project includes innovative safety improvement to allow recruit movement and operations within the pit and target area during live fire with tunnel systems provided for safe movement up and down range during training activities. The project includes enhanced Surface Danger Zone (SDZ) containment with 25 ft tall side walls and a 42 ft safety berm system as a backstop with a ballistic soil filled berm and Shock Absorbing Concrete (SACON) wall. The project tis located along a bayou system at low elevations susceptible to tidal influence so creating grading and drainage improvement, including tidal check valves are being implemented to reduce the impacts of the flood prone area.
When complete the project will include fifty (50) firing lanes and targets and firing lines at the 25, 100, 200, 300 and 500 yard positions, as well as additional 100 meter and 25 meter for zero capabilities. An extra 600 yard firing line is also being added for rifle club tournaments and practice. Water, sewer, access road and parking infrastructure are also being designed as part of the civil site improvements. Key focus on future expansion of the overall range complex is being implemented in design with access road and tunnel connectivity.
